The Mosfellsbaer Municipality

The municipality of Mosfellsbaer is the seventh largest municipality in Iceland with a population of 12.000.

Conveniently located about 15. min. drive away from Reykjavik City Centre, Mosfellsbaer is a family friendly town with acres of open space for outdoor recreation. 

Mosfellsbaer has four primary schools and one upper secondary school. In addition, the town offers its inhabitants an active cultural scene, a library, two swimming pools as well as various sport and leisure activities.

Mosfellsbaer is surrounded by beautiful landscapes and historic sites. The town offers an extensive network of paths and routes for walkers, hikers and cyclists. For sport enthusiasts Mosfellsbaer provides two spacious sport centers and an indoor football arena. In addition, horse riding and golf are popular among the locals.

The Mosfellsbaer Municipality Service Centre is located at Þverholt 2.

Opening hours:

  •  Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 08:00 to 16:00.
  • Wednesdays from 08:00 to 18:00.

Services for Children

Education

The following child care options are available for infants and toddlers.

Licensed Child Care Providers

Mosfellsbaer municipality grants operating licenses to child care providers in private homes. The municipality is responsible for the management and supervision of their operations but each child care provider is an independent contractor.

Parents and guardians are responsible for the placement of their child with a licensed child care provider and must apply directly to their selected child care provider.

Nursery Schools outside of Mosfellsbaer

Mosfellsbaer municipality has a service agreement with two nursery schools outside of Mosfellsbaer: Fossakot and Korpukot. Both admit children aged 9 months and older.

Parents and guardians are responsible for the placement of their child with nursery schools Foassakot and Korpukot and must apply directly to their selected nursery school.

Nursery Schools in Mosfellsbaer

Mosfellsbaer municipality operates two nursery schools: Hlíð and Hulduberg. Both admit children aged 12 months and older.

Parents and guardians must apply for a nursery school placement for their child using the Mosfellsbaer Service Portal.

Nursery schools are either operated by the Mosfellsbaer municipality, private entities or privately operated with a service agreement with the municipality.

There are eight nursery schools located in Mosfellsbaer:

  • Helgafellsskóli.
  • Hlaðhamrar.
  • Hlíð.
  • Hulduberg.
  • Höfðaberg (4 and 5 years old).
  • Krikaskóli.
  • Leirvogstunguskóli.
  • Reykjakot.

 

In general children attend nursery school from the age of 18 months.

Parents or guardians must apply for a nursery school placement for their child using the Mosfellsbaer Service Portal.

Primary education is compulsory for children aged 6 to 16 years old.

There are four primary schools located in Mosfellsbaer:

  • Helgafellsskóli.
  • Lágafellsskóli.
  • Krikaskóli.
  • Varmárskóli.

Recreation Centres

All four primary schools operate recreation centres that offer after school programs every weekday until 17:00.

This is an optional service that parents and guardians must apply for using the Mosfellsbaer Service Portal.

School Transport

Bus service is provided for children attending Varmárskóli who live at least 1,5 km away from the school.

Students who reside in Reykjahverfi, above Reykjalundarvegur road, in Leirvogstunga, Mosfellsdalur valley and Helgafellsland must go to a designated pick-up area/bus stop when using the bus service.

School Meals

Mosfellsbaer's elementary schools promote healthy eating and provide healthy, tasty and nutritious meals. All schools adhere to the Directorate of Health's recommendations regarding a healthy, balanced diet and portion sizes for children.

This is an optional service that parents and guardians must apply for using the Mosfellsbaer Service Portal.

 

Everyone who has either completed primary school, received an equivalent basic education or reached the age of 16 can apply for a placement in a secondary school.

There is one secondary school, FMOS, located in Mosfellsbaer. The school offers academic programs in social science and natural science as well as an open program. Students graduate with an Icelandic matriculation examination ("stúdentspróf") that is the minimum requirement for admission to undergraduate programs at the University of Iceland.

 

 

Grants

The Municipality of Mosfellsbaer offers financial support for children aged 6 to 18 with legal residence in Mosfellsbaer. The child‘s parent or guardian must apply for the grant on behalf of the child using the Mosfellsbaer Service Portal.

The financial support is available from August 15th each year until May 31st the following year.

The amount offered per child can be used when the child is registered at a selected leisure activity. If the association does not offer the option of applying the amount per child when registering, the amount must be transferred to the association using the Mosfellsbaer Service Portal.

Courses and/or workshops should be at least 10 weeks per term. They should be operated with and under the guidance of qualified instructors.

2019-2020:

  • A parent or guardian to a child born in 2002 - 2013 can apply for their grant on behalf of the child, from August 15th 2019 to May 31st 2020.
  • Once a child turns 18 years old she/he has to apply by themselves.
  • All applications must be submitted through the Mosfellsbaer Service Portal.
  • Please note that only children aged 6-18 with legal residence in Mosfellsbær can apply for the grant.
